WEEKEND ITINERARY VISIT FRANKLIN: FROM THE WILD WEST COAST TO THE SHOREBIRD COAST
For a truly spectacular weekend, exit SH1 at Pukekohe and after dinner at a local restaurant in Pukekohe head to Port Waikato’s Sunset Beach for wild, rugged surf and black sand and the most incredible sunset views.
Stay at Port Waikato Holiday Park and in the morning enjoy fishing or strolling along the Maretai beach sand dunes. Travel through Tuakau and Pukekawa to Mercer Airfield to if you have ever wanted to learn to fly, take a trial flight with Auckland Recreational Flying Club from Coast to Coast and enjoy our fabulous area from 2,000 feet. Travel out to Kaiaua and Miranda to enjoy the calm crystal waters and serenity of tens of thousands of migratory birds on the Shorebird Coast. Stay at the Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre, the Miranda Holiday Park or Homestead B&B, park your motorhome at Ray’s Rest or travel a little further north to the Taapapakanga reserve where you can camp and enjoy a historical homestead and stunning coastal walkway. Savour the freshest fish and chips at Kaiaua and fabulous kiwi hospitality at the Kaiaua pub.
